Cataloguing (potentially) dangerous situations, and warning drivers about these situations at the right point in time, offers drivers the opportunity to anticipate these situations in a timely and defensive manner. Thanks to the high density of smartphones, a preventative approach using an app is easy to implement. The Journey risk management (JRM) app is developed do prevent accident by alerting drivers.
Using the smartphone’s GPS capability, the app knows where the vehicle is. The information about dangerous situations and the route is stored in the smartphone’s memory and is therefore also available without a data connection. The app uses the colours green, orange and red to indicate the risk score of the road section the driver is on at any particular moment in time. The extensive safety audit has also indicated what the dangers are. Depending on the type of vehicle e.g. large or small truck, the app indicates a safe speed whilst simultaneously displaying the speed being driven. If the driver does not adhere to the speed indicated, the speed display will go red. Danger hotspots (and their causes) are also reported to the driver in a timely manner.
To ensure that the driver can focus his full attention on the road the app is entirely voice supported. It reports the road section’s safety score in the driver’s own language including the cause of any danger, the recommended safe speed and whether that speed has been exceeded.
The JRM app is developed together with Institute of Road Traffic Education (India). Read more about the project on the IRTE website.
