- National, regional and local

## A single reliable source for road safety

Good road-safety policy starts with reliable figures. Yet for a long time not every accident was registered, and the data that did exist was scattered across different sources. STAR — Smart Traffic Accident Registration — changes that.

STAR merges the records of the police with the claims reported by insurers into one complete database of traffic accidents in the Netherlands. Historical data has been available since 2014 and the figures are updated daily, so accidents, casualties and road deaths can be analysed at national, regional and local level.

## STAR in figures

Founded in 2012, STAR has grown into the standard for accident registration in the Netherlands.

- **2012** — Founded by the police, the Association of Insurers and VIA
- **100%** — The goal: every traffic accident reliably registered
- **10+** — Government bodies and interest groups back STAR

## Self-reporting via MobielSchadeMelden

The key to complete registration is that those involved report the accident themselves. Through MobielSchadeMelden.nl they record the basic details of an accident digitally and in a uniform way — in the same step in which they report the damage to their insurer.

With [CrashR](https://www.via.nl/gbr/en/products/crashr), integrated into MobielSchadeMelden, those involved draw the situation accurately on an up-to-date map. This produces usable, structured data without any extra administrative burden.

## A broadly supported partnership

STAR works on the Service4Data principle: data becomes available to everyone working towards safer traffic. Alongside the founders — the police, the Association of Insurers and VIA — STAR is supported by road authorities, interest groups and researchers.

The parties involved include Rijkswaterstaat, the Association of Provinces, the Association of Netherlands Municipalities, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, road-safety institute SWOV, VeiligheidNL, the ANWB, the Cyclists' Union, TeamAlert and Safe Traffic Netherlands.
