One platform for road safety

VIA Software brings together the most important data sources for road safety in one environment. Police, municipalities and provinces work with the same figures, the same maps and the same analysis tools — and can easily share findings with elected officials and other partners.

The platform helps road authorities, police and policy-makers answer road-safety questions. By bringing together multiple data sources, it creates a complete picture of developments, risks and opportunities across the road network.

Policy and strategy

What are we going to do about it?

Road-safety policy requires choices. By combining risk indicators, a risk-based picture of the network emerges. Accidents, speed behaviour and road characteristics help you set priorities, choose measures and justify investments.

What is happening here?

Road-safety investigations often start with a specific trigger. By combining accident data, speed behaviour and road characteristics, a complete picture of the situation quickly emerges. This supports traffic engineers, policy advisers and enforcement officers in analyses, evaluating measures and road-safety studies.

Public enquiries

Is the signal justified?

Reports from residents are often the first indicators of potential road-safety problems. Historical and current accident data, speed data and road characteristics allow these signals to be assessed quickly and objectively. This supports transparent and fact-based communication with residents, elected officials and everyone else involved.

VIA Software in use

Every month, we help more than a thousand professionals work with data-driven road safety.

From data to decision

The Safe System approach asks road authorities to work risk-based: tackling risks before an accident happens. VIA Software puts the risk indicators you steer on onto one map — accidents, actual speeds and road characteristics.

That way you decide where to act first, find the cause and justify the measure. No specialist knowledge of data analysis required.

After the measure, a before/after report shows its effect. The insights are also used directly in management reports, grant applications and regional consultations. Municipalities and regions using the platform can communicate about road safety quickly and credibly — internally and externally.

Based on reliable data sources

Accidents
Annual updateGreat Britain

Insight into where traffic accidents occur, which road users are involved and what trends are visible over time.

Data source

The data comes from STATS19, the UK's official road accident reporting system operated by the Department for Transport and recorded by police forces across Great Britain.

Speeds
Daily updateNational coverage

Insight into actual speed behaviour on the road network, including average speeds, V85 values and speed trends per road segment.

Data source

The data comes from HERE, a provider of Floating Car Data (FCD) based on millions of anonymous vehicle movements per day.

Road type and speed limit
Updated with each map releaseNational coverage

Insight into how each road is laid out: speed limit, road function, urban or rural, number of lanes, dual carriageways, surfacing and speed humps.

Data source

The data comes from the HERE road network, the same digital map the speeds are measured on, so road characteristics and speeds line up on every road segment.

Surroundings
Updated with each map releaseNational coverage

Insight into what happens along the road: how dense the buildings are, how many shops and restaurants there are, where people want to cross, how hard that is and which roads lie on the walking route to a school.

Data source

Calculated from HERE addresses and points of interest, per road segment and its immediate surroundings.
