One platform for road safety

VIA Software brings together the most important data sources for road safety in one environment. Cities, counties, regional agencies and law enforcement work with the same numbers, the same maps and the same analysis tools — and can easily share findings with elected officials and other partners.

The platform helps transportation agencies, law enforcement and planners answer road safety questions. By bringing together multiple data sources, it creates a complete picture of trends, risks and opportunities across the road network.

Programs and strategy

What are we going to do about it?

A road safety program requires choices. Combining risk indicators creates a risk-based picture of the network. Crashes, speeds and roadway characteristics help you set priorities, choose countermeasures and justify investments.

What is happening here?

Road safety studies often start with a specific trigger. Combining crash data, speeds and roadway characteristics quickly creates a complete picture of the situation. This supports traffic engineers, planners and enforcement officers in analyses, countermeasure evaluations and road safety studies.

Public inquiries

Is the concern justified?

Reports from residents are often the first sign of a potential road safety problem. Historical and current crash data, speed data and roadway characteristics allow these concerns to be assessed quickly and objectively. This supports transparent, fact-based communication with residents, elected officials and everyone else involved.

VIA Software in use

Every month, we help more than a thousand professionals work on data-driven road safety.

From data to decision

The Safe System Approach asks agencies to work proactively: addressing risk before a crash happens. VIA Software puts the risk indicators you manage onto one map — crashes, actual speeds and roadway characteristics.

That way you decide where to act first, find the cause and justify the countermeasure. No specialist knowledge of data analysis required.

After the countermeasure, a before/after report shows its effect. The insights are also used directly in council reports, grant applications and regional coordination. Agencies using the platform can communicate about road safety quickly and credibly — internally and externally.

Based on reliable data sources

Crashes
Daily updateCalifornia

Insight into where traffic crashes occur, which road users are involved and what trends are visible over time.

Data source

The data comes from the California Crash Reporting System (CCRS), the statewide crash records of the California Highway Patrol, which include crashes reported by local law enforcement agencies.

Speeds
Daily updateStatewide coverage

Insight into actual speeds on the road network, including average speeds, 85th percentile speeds and speed trends per road segment.

Data source

The data comes from HERE, a provider of Floating Car Data (FCD) based on millions of anonymous vehicle movements per day.

Road type and speed limit
Updated with each map releaseStatewide coverage

Insight into how each road is designed: speed limit, functional class, urban or rural, number of lanes, divided highways, pavement and speed humps.

Data source

The data comes from the HERE road network, the same digital map the speeds are measured on, so roadway characteristics and speeds line up on every road segment.

Surroundings
Updated with each map releaseStatewide coverage

Insight into what happens along the road: how dense the buildings are, how many shops and restaurants there are, where people want to cross, how hard that is and which roads lie on the walking route to a school.

Data source

Calculated from HERE addresses and points of interest, per road segment and its immediate surroundings.
